A Cold-War Relic: If you run for the wall, the East Germans will see you and then, well, the next bit you aren’t going to like very much. 

Well, that’s the only hint I learned about these Zeiss observation binoculars–that they were used on the border of East/West Germany in the cold war. 

Dating the Big Eyes

Scroll down and you’ll see a serial number of 3400786, and a visit to the Camera-Wiki entry for Carl Zeiss serial numbers page here puts these between 1949 to 1952. 

Provenance

There is no exceptional provenance here. I purchased these at an online Auction with a group of other art pieces and home furnishings.
